Where to Stay in Ksamil: Best Areas & Hotels

by NoraKsamil

If you’re wondering where to stay in Ksamil, there’s one thing that makes the decision easier: the town is compact. The catch is that your exact location still affects your trip quite a lot, especially during the busy summer months.

We’ve visited Ksamil twice, first in August and then again in early May, and honestly, it felt like we were seeing two different destinations. In May, Ksamil was wonderfully quiet, though not every restaurant, beach bar, and hotel was fully open yet. In August, the sea was just as unbelievably turquoise as the photos promise, but it was also the most touristy place we experienced in Albania.

So yes, Ksamil is genuinely beautiful. But no, it is not a sleepy secret escape where you can drop your towel on an empty stretch of sand and have the beach to yourself.

That’s exactly why picking the right area matters. Some parts of Ksamil are much easier if you’re travelling with a car, some are ideal if you want to walk everywhere, and others are simply better if you’re hoping for a more relaxed beach stay without paying ridiculous prices for a sunbed.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the best areas to stay in Ksamil, along with our choices for the best hotels in Ksamil in each neighbourhood.

Map: where to stay in Ksamil

A map is useful here because Ksamil may be small, but the experience changes depending on which side of town you choose. The biggest things to think about are parking, beach crowds, and how close you want to be to the busiest central area.

Is Ksamil a good place to base yourself?

Ksamil is a great base if your trip is mainly about beaches. The water really is incredibly clear, the coastal scenery really is that pretty, and it works well for a short seaside break or as one stop on a longer Albania road trip.

But Ksamil is also extremely seasonal.

When we came in early May, it was peaceful and much less crowded, which we loved in many ways, but parts of town still felt like they were waking up for the season. In August, everything was open and buzzing, but the jump in crowds was massive.

So, is Ksamil worth staying in? Yes, definitely, as long as you arrive with realistic expectations.

Stay in Ksamil if:

  1. you want your trip to revolve around beach time
  2. you do not mind a very touristy atmosphere in high season
  3. you want an easy base for nearby beaches and Butrint

You might prefer somewhere like Himarë or Dhërmi if:

  1. you are looking for somewhere less crowded
  2. packed beaches and endless rows of loungers sound like your nightmare
  3. you are trying to keep costs lower in summer
  4. you want a generally more relaxed Riviera vibe

Best areas to stay in Ksamil

Below, we’ve added hotel recommendations for each area, so you can choose both the best area to stay in Ksamil and the best hotel in Ksamil for the kind of trip you want.

1️⃣ North Ksamil – best for value, parking & road trips

If you’re exploring Albania by car, this is one of the most sensible areas to stay in Ksamil.

North Ksamil beaches with shoreline and coastal scenery

When we say North Ksamil, we mean the northern side of town close to “Ksamil Caravan Camping”, especially the more residential streets on the opposite side of the main road (SH81) that runs through town. This is where we stayed, and as a practical base, it worked really well for us.

It was quiet at night, parking was much easier than in the centre, and we were still only about a 10 to 15-minute walk from the beach. There was a little downhill on the way there, but nothing difficult, and walking back in the evening felt perfectly manageable.

This area is not the most charming part of Ksamil, and it definitely is not the kind of place where you step out of your hotel and straight onto the sand. But if you want somewhere calmer, easier for parking, and usually better value than the beachfront, it makes a lot of sense.

What it’s like

North Ksamil feels more local and residential, with far fewer beach-club vibes than the centre. It is more practical than picture-perfect, which can be a real advantage if you arrive by car and do not want to spend every day stressing about where to park.

For us, this area was a very good compromise. It was quieter than being right in the middle of town, but still close enough that walking to the beach or heading out for dinner never felt like a hassle.

Best for

  1. road trippers and travellers with a car
  2. quieter evenings
  3. better-value accommodation
  4. anyone who does not mind walking 10 to 15 minutes to the beach

Not ideal if…

This is not the best area to stay in Ksamil if you want that classic beach-holiday feeling right on your doorstep. If you want to stroll out in flip-flops and reach the busiest beaches within a couple of minutes, Central Ksamil will suit you better.

Our take

For travellers arriving with a car, this is one of the best areas to stay in Ksamil. It is not the prettiest corner of town, but it is definitely one of the most convenient.

2️⃣ Central Ksamil – best for first-timers, walking everywhere & a lively atmosphere

If this is your first visit and you want the easiest, most straightforward base, Central Ksamil is the place to look.

Central Ksamil beaches with shoreline and coastal scenery

Central Ksamil is where most of the action happens. This is where you’ll find the busiest beaches, rows of sun loungers, beach clubs, restaurants, shops, and the facilities most visitors want nearby on a short stay.

If you only have a couple of nights in Ksamil and want everything within easy walking distance, staying central keeps things simple. You can spend the day at the beach, head back to shower, go out for dinner, and wander home without thinking too much about logistics.

The downside is pretty clear: in peak season, this is also the busiest and often the most expensive-feeling part of Ksamil.

When we visited in August, the central beaches were undeniably beautiful, but they were also crowded enough to make it very obvious that Ksamil is not an undiscovered gem. One thing worth knowing before you book: on many of the main central beaches, there is very limited space to bring your own towel, because sunbeds take up so much of the shoreline.

What it’s like

This is the classic Ksamil postcard scene: pretty coves, bright blue water, lots of restaurants and beach bars, and plenty happening from morning until night.

In the evening, the main road feels lively, but Ksamil is spread out enough that it did not feel like one huge packed party strip. Still, this is absolutely the most developed and tourist-focused part of town.

Best for

  1. first-time visitors
  2. short trips
  3. travellers without a car
  4. anyone who wants to walk everywhere
  5. people who prioritise convenience above all else

Not ideal if…

If you dislike crowds, need easy parking, or do not want to pay peak-season prices for central beach access, this probably is not the best option for you.

Our take

For most first-time visitors to Ksamil, this is the easiest area to stay in. We would recommend it for convenience, but not if your dream trip involves quiet beaches, lots of empty space, and bargain sunbeds, because that is not really what central Ksamil offers.

3️⃣ Lori / Bora Bora / Last Bay – best for a more laid-back beach stay

If we were returning to Ksamil tomorrow, this is the area we would choose.

Paradise Beach on the southern coast of Ksamil
Paradise Beach on the southern coast of Ksamil

This southern side of Ksamil felt more relaxed to us than the centre, while still being convenient enough for restaurants, shops, and a beach-focused holiday. It is not a secret untouched corner of Albania, so we do not want to oversell it, but it did feel like a much better balance.

For us, Last Bay was the highlight.

Compared with the main central beaches, it felt much easier to find cheaper loungers or simply arrive with your own towel, which made a surprisingly big difference. That was one of our main lessons from Ksamil in summer: the central beaches are stunning, but they are heavily organised around paid loungers and can feel crowded very quickly.

Around Lori, Bora Bora, and Last Bay, beach days felt a little more flexible and less intense. There were also more smaller beaches to choose from, without the same level of chaos we experienced in the centre.

What it’s like

This area still feels firmly part of Ksamil, but with a softer, more relaxed edge. It is scenic, beachy, and connected enough that you do not feel cut off. Even in peak season, it felt like a better mix of convenience and actually enjoying the coastline.

There were still enough restaurants and shops nearby, which is important, because staying somewhere quieter is only enjoyable if it does not mean you are bored or walking too far every time you want dinner.

Best for

  1. couples
  2. travellers wanting a calmer beach stay
  3. visitors who prefer beach days away from the busiest central stretch
  4. anyone hoping for a better chance of finding space without feeling squeezed in

Not ideal if…

If you want to be right in the very centre of town, or you only have one night and want everything as central as possible, Central Ksamil may still be the better fit.

Our take

This is our personal choice for the best area to stay in Ksamil. It felt more relaxed, better for genuinely enjoyable beach days, and less frustrating than staying right in the middle of the central strip.

Our honest opinion on the best area to stay in Ksamil

If this is your first visit and you want the simplest setup, stay in Central Ksamil.

If you’re road-tripping through Albania and care about easier parking, quieter nights, and better value, stay in North Ksamil.

But if you want our honest pick, choose somewhere around Lori, Bora Bora, or Last Bay. For us, that area offered the best combination of beautiful beaches, a more relaxed atmosphere, and less of the central Ksamil chaos.

Things to know before booking a hotel in Ksamil

Ksamil is highly seasonal

This is one of the most important things to understand before you book.

We visited once in early May and once in August, and the contrast was huge. In May, Ksamil was quiet and much calmer, but some places had not opened yet for the season. In August, everything was in full swing, but it was also much busier and noticeably more expensive.

If you want the beautiful beaches without the peak-season circus, June or September will probably be a much better choice.

Parking matters more than many guides suggest

If you are travelling by car, pay attention to this.

We would definitely choose a hotel on the other side of the main road again if staying in North Ksamil. The more residential northern area had plenty of free parking and felt far less stressful than the centre.

Central Ksamil, by comparison, can be annoying for parking, particularly in high season.

Driving to beaches can be hit or miss

If you want to drive to beaches around Ksamil, the southern side is generally more manageable, especially if you arrive early in the day.

A few extra notes from our experience:

  1. Last Bay felt like a much easier and more practical beach option
  2. Monastiri Beach was straightforward enough to reach by car
  3. Pulëbardha Beach felt quite awkward to drive to – gravelly, steep, and only really worth it if you are comfortable on rougher access roads

That is useful to know if your plan is to hop between beaches by car rather than stay central and walk everywhere.

Ksamil is not a hidden gem

This is the honest, no-sugar-coating part.

Ksamil was without question the most touristy place we visited in Albania. The beaches are absolutely gorgeous, so it was still memorable and still worth seeing, but it is not an under-the-radar destination where you can easily escape the crowds.

If you are travelling on a budget, dislike busy beaches, or want a more relaxed Albanian Riviera experience, you should either:

  1. visit in June or September
  2. stay outside the central area
  3. or seriously think about basing yourself somewhere like Himarë or Dhërmi instead

What is the best area to stay in Ksamil?

Is Ksamil easy to walk around?

Yes, Ksamil is small and fairly easy to explore on foot. We stayed in North Ksamil and were still only about a 10 to 15-minute walk from the beach.

Do you need a car in Ksamil?

Not necessarily once you are in town, especially if you stay centrally. But if you are road-tripping around Albania, having a car gives you much more flexibility and makes it easier to visit nearby beaches and places like Butrint.

Where should I stay in Ksamil if I have a car?

Stay in Ksamil if beaches are your main priority. Stay in Sarandë if you prefer a larger town with more going on, more restaurants, and a more year-round feel.

How many nights should you spend in Ksamil?

For most travellers, 2 to 3 nights is enough. That gives you time to enjoy the beaches, take a day trip or two, and decide whether you love Ksamil or are ready to escape the loungers.

Final thoughts on where to stay in Ksamil

If you want the easiest base, choose Central Ksamil. If you want the most practical base for a road trip, choose North Ksamil. But if you want our personal recommendation, stay near Last Bay for a more relaxed atmosphere, a better beach setup, and a less chaotic version of Ksamil.
