Renting a Car in Paros: What to Know Before You Book

by NoraParos

Renting a car in Paros is, without question, the easiest way to experience the island beyond the obvious spots. Yes, you can get around by bus if you only plan to stay between Parikia and Naoussa, but if quiet coves, pretty hill villages, last-minute detours and crowd-free beach mornings sound like your kind of trip, having your own car changes everything. The roads are also fairly simple to navigate, and rental prices are still sensible compared with some other Greek islands.

We’ve visited Paros twice, and on both trips, having a rental car made the whole island feel more open and flexible. We could leave with no strict plan, stop at random tavernas for lunch, follow signs to beaches we hadn’t heard of, and avoid being tied to bus timetables. Dropping the car back at the port just a few minutes before boarding our ferry was the perfect finish — easy, relaxed and stress-free.

In this guide, we’re covering the real costs, the best places to book, insurance details, driving tips and the little practical lessons we picked up along the way.

❓Is Renting a Car in Paros Worth It?

If you want to see more than the beach next to your hotel, then yes — renting a car in Paros is absolutely worth it. The island is much more enjoyable when you can move around freely instead of planning your day around bus departures or paying for multiple taxi rides.

Here’s why we think it makes such a difference:

Complete freedom to plan your own Paros itinerary. Drive wherever you like, whenever you like, whether that means reaching Kolymbithres before the tour boats arrive or heading to Santa Maria for sunset without stressing about the last bus back.

Easy access to hidden corners. Some of our best Paros memories came from unplanned stops in tiny villages and family-run tavernas we would never have reached without a car. The same goes for many of the quieter beaches — the really lovely ones are often nowhere near a bus stop.

Better value for couples, families & groups. Once you split the daily rental price between two or more people, a car often works out cheaper than taxis, especially if you’re moving between beaches with towels, snorkels, water bottles and beach bags.

More flexibility with where you stay. With a car, you’re not limited to staying in Paros only in the busiest areas. We’ve stayed slightly outside the main towns for lower prices and quieter evenings, while still being able to reach everything easily.

✈️⛴️ How Do You Rent a Car in Paros Greece?

We’ve hired cars in Paros twice now, and the biggest thing we learned is this: book ahead, especially if you’re travelling from June to September or need an automatic car. Paros gets very busy in summer, and rental prices can rise quickly. On our first visit, we actually saw rates increase overnight — not a mistake we wanted to repeat.

Now, we always reserve a car online before we travel. We usually use Discover Cars because it compares rental companies across Paros, including airport and port pick-ups, shows real customer reviews, and makes the final price clear from the start — no annoying hidden extras. Free cancellation is also useful if your ferry, flight or plans change. We still like to check the specific rental office reviews on Google Maps too, especially for pick-up points in Parikia or at the airport.

To find the best car hire prices overseas, we usually start with Discover Cars, which in our experience almost always shows cheaper options than booking directly with small local rental shops.

Most convenient pick-up points

  1. Paros Airport (PAS) — the easiest option if you arrive by plane
  2. Parikia Port — perfect if you are coming by ferry or island-hopping

On both of our Paros trips, we collected the car directly at the port, and the process was very smooth. Returning it just before catching the ferry to Naxos was just as simple.

💵 How much does it cost to rent a car in Paros?

Prices in Paros can vary a lot depending on the month, the type of car and how far in advance you book. As a general guide, this is what you can expect:

On our most recent trip, we paid €32/day in late May for a compact car with full insurance. A friend who visited in August paid €57/day in Naoussa for the exact same model. So yes, booking early really can save you money.

If you’re travelling as a couple, family or group, sharing the daily cost usually makes a rental car much cheaper than taxis or organised tours, especially if your plan is to visit several beaches in one day.

The rules for hiring a car in Paros are quite simple, but there are a few details worth checking before you confirm your booking.

Can You Rent a Car in Paros With a US, UK or EU Licence?

US Drivers

Yes, US citizens can rent a car in Greece with a regular US driving licence. You will need to:

  1. Be over 21 (some companies add a young driver fee for renters under 25)
  2. Have held your licence for at least 1 year

Officially, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is no longer required, but we’ve seen rental desks and even police on Greek islands occasionally ask for one. If you travel regularly, getting an IDP can be worth it for peace of mind — it only takes a few minutes at AAA.

UK Drivers

Yes — UK driving licences are accepted in Greece. The usual requirements are:

  1. 21–70 years old
  2. Licence held for at least 12 months
  3. Young driver fee if you are under 25

Despite Brexit, car rental rules in Greece have not changed dramatically for UK travellers. We still suggest carrying an IDP if you want extra reassurance, particularly if your licence is older or a bit worn — we know someone who was questioned about exactly that.

EU & EEA Drivers

Drivers from EU countries, as well as Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, can use their standard national driving licence — no IDP is needed.

Do you need an International Driver’s Permit (IDP)?

Officially, you do not need an IDP if you are from the US, UK or EU.

That said, we’ve read plenty of reports — and had it happen once on another island — where rental agents or police asked to see one. If your licence is not in English or Greek, or you travel often, it’s a small extra document that can prevent unnecessary hassle.

Insurance

Yes, insurance is essential, and in our opinion, full cover is worth paying for. We normally choose full insurance through Discover Cars because it tends to be cheaper and more comprehensive than adding cover at the counter when you arrive. We wouldn’t drive uninsured at home, and a holiday abroad is definitely not the time to take risks.

Deposit & Credit Card Requirements

Most rental companies in Paros will place a security deposit hold on your credit card when you collect the vehicle. This is standard and acts as a guarantee for possible damage or extra charges. The hold is released after you return the car, although it can take around 5–15 business days to appear back in your available balance. Typical deposits for renting a car in Paros Greece range from €400 to €1,000.

If you don’t have a credit card, renting can be more difficult:

  1. Some smaller agencies may accept debit cards, but usually with a much larger deposit
  2. Many companies insist on a credit card in the main driver’s name before they release the car

We learned the hard way to always check the deposit amount before booking — once, a rental hold used up half of our weekly spending limit. These days, we usually choose full insurance to lower the deposit and avoid that kind of stress.

🌵 Our Best Tips For Driving in Paros

✔️ Film the car before you leave

Before driving away from the rental office, walk slowly around the vehicle and record a video of everything — exterior, interior, wheels, bumpers and mirrors. Even small scratches matter. We once found damage that had not been listed on the paperwork, and that quick video saved us from an awkward discussion when we returned the car. Two minutes can protect you from a very expensive argument.

✔️ Choose full insurance

Driving in Paros Greece is usually easy, but parking can be tight and some beach access roads are dusty, narrow or bumpy. We always take full cover with Discover Cars — it costs a little more per day, but it can reduce the deposit and removes a lot of worry. We don’t take chances when driving at home, and we don’t do it on holiday either.

✔️ Book accommodation with parking

Trying to find street parking near Naoussa after 8 pm in July feels like a competitive sport. Having on-site parking made our evenings so much easier — no circling busy streets in a hot car when everyone is hungry and ready for dinner. Always check that “parking included” is listed before booking a hotel or Airbnb.

✔️ Make use of free parking lots

There are plenty of free parking areas in Paros — in Parikia, Naoussa, Lefkes and near many beaches. You may need to walk a few minutes, but it is much better than squeezing onto a narrow roadside verge.

✔️ Avoid long drives late after beach days

Sun, heat, wind and swimming can make you surprisingly sleepy. Swap drivers if you can, or stop for coffee before heading back to your accommodation.

🩴 Best Places To Visit With A Rental Car In Paros

If you decide to rent a car in Paros, you’ll be able to explore almost every corner of this beautiful island at your own pace. Below are some of the Paros highlights we think are well worth adding to your route.

📍Parikia

Aerial view of Parikia town and coastline on Paros

Parikia is the capital of Paros and the town beside Paros ferry port. Unlike many island port towns, Parikia is definitely worth spending time in.

The lovely old town of Parikia is filled with traditional whitewashed houses, blue shutters and a maze of narrow pedestrian lanes. If you want to understand more about the island’s history, visit the Archeological Museum of Paros or the Byzantine church of Panagia Ekatontapiliani, also known as the Church of the Virgin Mary.

Take a walk along the lively waterfront promenade, and in around 10 minutes you’ll reach Livadia Beach. Continue for another 10 minutes on foot and you’ll arrive at Parikia Beach; both beaches offer sunbeds and umbrellas for rent.

📍Naoussa

Naoussa is a beautiful coastal village on the northeast coast of Paros, about a 10-kilometre drive from Parikia. It has some of the best seafood restaurants on the island, making it a great place to stop for lunch or dinner. Choose Naoussa over Parikia, if you prefer a more polished, upmarket holiday atmosphere.

You can visit the 13th-century Venetian Fort ruins and Agioi Anagyroi Church, or join a wine-tasting tour at the Moraitis Winery. It’s also easy to spend a few hours wandering the village’s classic Cycladic streets, strolling around the harbour, or seeing Naoussa from the water on a traditional caique boat. Don’t miss Naoussa’s gorgeous sandy beaches either, including Santa Maria and Monastiri.

📍Lefkes

Lefkes is a traditional Greek village in the heart of Paros, surrounded by pine trees, olive groves and peaceful countryside.

One of the nicest things to do in Lefkes is simply wander through its narrow stone lanes, where tightly packed whitewashed houses spill over with bougainvillaea. Take your time and stop for a coffee and a sweet pastry in Agia Triadi Square before visiting the 19th-century church of the same name or the small but worthwhile Folk Art Museum.

📍Paros Beaches

With a rental car, it’s much easier to visit the best beach clubs in Paros. There are so many excellent beaches around the island that it’s hard to choose just one.

In the north, you can drive to Kolymbithres Beach, famous for its smooth granite rock formations, sandy Piperi Beach, or beautiful Santa Maria Beach near Naoussa. In the south, head to Chrissi Akti for long golden sand, or try the natural healing mud at Kalogeros Beach.

If you enjoy organised beaches with sunbeds and facilities, aim for Monastiri or Pyrgos Beach. If you prefer wilder, quieter shores, make your way to Molos or Legeri Beach, which is also nudist-friendly.

Church of Saint Constantine on Paros with traditional Cycladic architecture

Is it difficult to drive in Paros?

No, not really. Paros is one of the easier Greek islands for driving. A main ring road circles much of the island, distances are short, and road signs are generally clear. In summer, you should expect extra traffic around Naoussa and Parikia, but it is rarely overwhelming. The only slightly more demanding stretch is the inland road through Lefkes, which is hilly and has a few blind bends, so just drive slowly and stay alert.

Is it worth renting a car in Paros?

Yes, especially if you want to explore beaches, inland villages, wineries and viewpoints at your own pace. If your plan is to stay only in Parikia or Naoussa and you’re happy using buses, you may not need one. But for us, many of the best places in Paros were between the main towns.

What is the minimum age to rent a car in Paros?

The minimum age is usually 21, and you must have held your licence for at least 12 months. Drivers under 25 may also be charged a young driver fee.

How many days do you need in Paros with a rental car?

You can drive around the island in one day, but we recommend 3–4 full days if you want time for beaches, Lefkes village, a winery visit and a few relaxed stops. With a car, it’s much easier to fit more into your trip without rushing.

Is Paros walkable?

Parikia and Naoussa are very walkable, with pedestrian streets, harbour areas and nearby beaches you can reach on foot. But to travel between towns and beaches, you’ll need either a rental car or the bus.

Should I rent a car or rely on buses?

Buses work well for the main towns and a few popular beaches, but they are not ideal for beach hopping or chasing sunrise and sunset spots. We tried the bus once, and standing around in 38°C heat was enough to convince us not to do it again.

Do I need automatic or manual?

Manual cars are more common and usually cheaper. Automatics are limited in summer and often sell out quickly, so book at least a month in advance if you need one.

Where’s the best place to rent a car in Paros?

The most convenient pick-up locations are Parikia Port and Paros Airport. We compare prices on Discover Cars and then check Google Maps reviews for the exact rental desk — a habit we picked up after one not-so-great experience in Santorini.

What side of the road do they drive on in Greece?

In Greece, drivers use the right-hand side of the road, like most of Europe and the US.

What fuel do cars use, and how does filling up work?

Most rental cars run on unleaded petrol. Petrol stations are easy to find around Parikia and Naoussa. Staff usually fill the tank for you — just say “Full, please” or “Gemáto parakaló” if you want to try a little Greek.

What’s the speed limit in Paros?

Typical limits are:

  1. 50 km/h in towns
  2. 80 km/h on open roads, although locals may drive faster 😅
  3. Speed cameras do exist, so it’s not worth testing them.

Is there free parking in Paros?

Yes — there are many free parking areas in Parikia, Naoussa, Lefkes and near several beaches. Paid parking is also available closer to busy areas, but we usually used the free lots and walked a few minutes.

Can I bring a rental car on the ferry to other islands?

Sometimes, but many rental companies either forbid it or charge an extra fee. Always read the rental conditions before booking if you plan to take the car to Naxos or Antiparos.

Do I need a credit card to rent a car in Paros?

Most companies require a credit card in the main driver’s name for the security deposit. Some smaller agencies may accept debit cards, but usually only with a much higher deposit.

Final Thoughts

So, do you really need to rent a car in Paros? If you want the freedom to explore the island properly, our answer is a very clear yes. Having a car on both of our trips completely changed how we experienced Paros — we reached quiet beaches we would never have found otherwise, stopped in small villages for lunch, and avoided waiting for buses under the hot sun. Driving around Paros is simple, distances are short, and car hire can still be reasonably priced if you book early.

Whether you’re visiting as a couple, a group of friends or a family, having your own wheels makes travelling around Paros easier, more flexible and a lot more fun. Just reserve early in summer, take full insurance for peace of mind, and make sure your accommodation has parking — seriously, you’ll thank yourself later.

If you’re ready to compare prices and availability, we usually begin with Discover Cars — it has been the most dependable option for us over the years.

🚗💙 Have an amazing trip, and enjoy driving the open roads of Paros.
